Tom Laird’s work begins with the belief that the objects that surround us enrich us and that “handcrafted items provide a unique link between the client and the craftsman. Just as important, they provide a path away from the mass produced and ordinary.”
Tom and the new Basile Studio Shop have this in common – our goal to keep it unique and keep it local which is why we love having his one of a kind vases, cutting boards, boxes and furniture in the Shop.
Quality of material is essential to Tom’s work. He uses the finest hardwoods available (Cherry, Walnut, Oak, Maple and Ash) and uses Indiana suppliers whenever possible, feeling strongly that wood is a renewable resource and should be treated with respect in regards to its growth, logging and restoration.
A selection of Tom’s work can always be found in the Shop, including his small inlay boxes (above) which are a perfect way to present a special piece of jewelry for Valentine’s Day (hint, hint).
A teacher too- Tom is also the head of the Art Center’s Wood Department. So, want to take a class from our 2010 Faculty of the Year? The second session of Tom’s Beginning Woodworking class is only seven weeks long and runs on Thursdays from 7-10pm, March 10-April 21 ($271/$245 for members). Contact our Guest Services Desk at 317.255.2464 to register or register online.
